The artist writes: "There was another vivid and memorable character — Gurney Halleck, a warrior-troubadour equally virtuosic with both sword and word. He taught the young duke fencing and martial arts, and also wrote poetry, knew aphorisms, and skillfully played the baliset. The baliset is a fictional stringed musical instrument, the favorite instrument of the wealthy houses of the Empire. Gurney is fanatically devoted to the duke and his family, becoming a close friend of Paul Atreides. I wanted to convey the character of this person, but not through a portrait — rather through objects. I chose cold steel and the baliset, added a chair with silk upholstery as a sign of the luxury Gurney was surrounded by, but with some fabric or cloak carelessly thrown over it — suggesting that wealth doesn't really concern him. Above, however, lie objects that are part of him, placed with care. And the colors were chosen deliberately — turquoise represents harmony between mind and emotions, creativity, tranquility, nobility; it is the color of the sky. Its opposite — golden, ochre, brown tones — represent earth, sun, warmth, optimism. This is how I see this remarkable, distinctive character!"
